I have a complicated relationship with limited-life challenges in Brawl Stars. They take a game I play to unwind and quietly convert it into a job interview where every mistimed Super goes on my permanent record. So when the Special Challenge went live back in December 2025, my first instinct was a long, theatrical groan. Four lives. Four. Then I actually read the fine print, and my groan softened into something closer to cautious optimism.

The twist? This challenge only demanded two wins per stage instead of the usual three. Suddenly the mountain looked less like Everest and more like a steep hill I could probably jog up, provided I didn't trip over my own greed.

The Shape of the Challenge

Three stages. Six levels total. Clear two matches in each stage and the next one unlocks. Reach six wins overall and the whole thing is done. It's a tidy little ladder, and honestly, that structure is the reason I finished it instead of rage-quitting somewhere around attempt three.

Stage Map Mode Wins Needed
Stage 1 Snow Fort Gem Grab 2
Stage 2 Holiday Chill Gem Grab 2
Stage 3 Gift Wrap Gem Grab 2

Every single stage runs Gem Grab, which is both a blessing and a curse. The rules are simple enough: pull gems out of the Gem Mine, or take them off the opponents you eliminate, then hold ten of them until the timer runs dry. The catch is the Angry Robo, a wandering hazard that shows up out of nowhere and starts swinging at whoever is nearest and least lucky.

Carrying ten gems in Gem Grab is a bit like cupping a hummingbird in your hands — everyone can see the glow leaking between your fingers, and everyone wants it.

Four Lives and a Lot of Praying

You start with four lives, and you can buy four more at 9 Gems a pop. I'll be honest: I have never loved this system. Buying extra lives feels like paying a ferryman for a river I'm not entirely sure I need to cross. But because this challenge only required two wins per stage, I never actually needed the extra attempts. I finished on my original set, which felt like a small personal victory worth bragging about for exactly one evening.

The real trick is the mode itself. Gem Grab rewards patience and rotation discipline far more than raw aggression, and that's where most players — including me on my worst days — fall apart.

Brawlers That Actually Carried Me

I tried a few different picks across the three maps, and a clear pattern emerged.

  • Max — My comfort pick. Her speed lets her steal loose gems, rotate out of danger, and bail out teammates who wander too deep. She's the friend who drives you home at 3 a.m.

  • Kaze and Kenji — Assassins that punish anyone standing alone near the Gem Mine. Kaze in particular feasts on distracted gem carriers.

  • Frank — A wall of a tank. He doesn't collect gems so much as he makes the entire map feel like his living room.

My best run was a Max-Kenji-Frank trio with two randoms who actually used their pings. Team up with people who communicate if you can. Random matchmaking is a lottery, and the odds are not kind.

What You Actually Walk Away With

Win six matches and the payout is:

  1. 6 random Starr Drops

  2. 1 Mecha Box

I'll admit I wished the grand prize were a guaranteed skin, the way earlier challenges handled it. But the Mecha Box has real upside — crack it open and you might land Mecha Colt, Mecha Mortis, or another Mecha skin from the lineup. It's a gamble, but a reasonably generous one.

Looking Back From 2026

The challenge wrapped up on December 13, 2025, right in the middle of the Brawliversary countdown. That celebration handed out a free random Starr Drop every day for seven days, plus mystery rewards through Daily Wins on December 12. December was genuinely stacked — the Mechmas Brawl Pass brought the Mecha Mandy family of skins, and the wider December 2025 update shook up the game with Buffies, the Claw Machine, and significant Brawl Pass changes including Keys, a Vault, and adjusted pricing.

If a similar challenge rolls around again in 2026, here's what I'd tell my past self:

  • Play two or three warm-up matches in the featured mode before spending a life.

  • Never chase a gem carrier alone unless you know where their teammates are.

  • Rotate early when the Angry Robo spawns. It doesn't care about your rank.

  • Save your Gems. Buying lives is a tax on impatience.

Would I do it all again? Probably. Four lives, six wins, and one shiny box — that's a fair trade for a weekend of sweaty palms.
